Uni love

For the first time in my life, all the subjects that I'm studying I truly enjoy.

It occurred to me when going home from chemistry lab the other day. As much as I say chem is a drag and four hour labs suck, I would not rather be doing any other subject. There are times when I seriously doubt whether I should continue with it, but then I remember how much joy it gives me when I understand a new concept.

When I'm not enjoying chem, it's maths. I only realised I really liked maths last year. Up until then, it had always been the chem and bio, but then I realised I never actually liked bio, and I was always better at maths than anything else. One of the things which gives me the most pleasure is just being able to be right and absolutely right. Doing two maths subjects is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Linear algebra is more of the traditional maths I've done, number crunching and lots of formulae. However real analysis is something totally new. It relies more on intuition and extending your knowledge beyond what you are taught. It is also hard as heck. Absolutely no coincidence that the most difficult maths subject I've ever done contains the most English.

And my other subject Psych stats, which is a combination of maths and easiness, rounds off my four units perfectly. It's not overly difficult but at the same time it is interesting. Well, I find it interesting. Hypothesis testing, parametric and non-parametric data, all that jazz.

Next semester won't be as good. Maths may get slightly better because instead of matrices non-stop in linear, it's differential equations so calculus makes a comeback. However the downsides are that chem will get harder, and compulsory four hour labs instead of just leaving whenever you finish, and the SCI2020 unit, which is scientific research and crap.

The good thing though is I might be able to get a day off on Thursday. However to do this, I'd have Mondays 9-5 with two hours of break, Tuesdays 9-4 with one hour and Wednesdays 8-6 with four hours break. But Fridays will just be the two hour psych lecture at 12, which is completely wag-able. So potentially, two days off, which translates into four day weekend!!!

Keeping quiet

You know what I love about bus rides? Epiphanies. Nothing like a good epiphany.

Today I've realised that I'm not a very emotional person. There's no great reason for it. I don't believe showing emotion is a sign of weakness, or I should be some sort of blank statue. It's more due to not feeling comfortable enough to really let go. Some people will always let you know how they feel. I won't. I'll also do my best not to let others know.

I remember there was once a time I thought it was perfectly acceptable to talk about other people. I had known about the act of talking about people behind their back but I never realised that I was doing it. Ever since about year 8, I've done my best to follow the golden rule of "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all". It has served me well for the most part.

Also I've noticed my blogging has been taking quite a heavy hit of late. There's no easy way to fix it. I'm still in my head as much as ever, it's just I'm much too lazy to transcribe it into blogular form. And whenever I try, I write one sentence and then decide it's not worthy. I shall try harder to write whatever the crap I feel like so I'll have something to read when I'm bored. Wish me luck!

Spartacus!

I just thought of a fanastic game to play, and it was inspired by this:

Or if you'd prefer, this:

It shall be called Operation Spartacus! And this is how it works:

It's a MSN thing, so if you don't use MSN that much it might now work as well. But what you do is, you and a friend change your nicknames to "Spartacus". It works best if you pick a friend with whom you have many mutal friends.

So you both have "Spartacus" as your nickname and hopefully, just hopefully, the more curious people will ask you or your friend about it and then you can tell them about the game. Then if they are the curious AND fun type, they'll change their nickname to "Spartacus" too. This shall continue until maybe one day, your entire list is filled with "Spartacus".

There aren't many rules of the game, just one. You can't go and actively recruit people, you must wait till they come and ask you. I think I'll also allow people to pretty up their nicknames if they want, as long as Spartacus is involved.

Obviously there'll be an issue of how long the game will go for. It's a personal thing. Some people will get bored quickly and bail, others [like me] will just let it stay there for eternity maybe.
